When is an unsubscribe link required and how to do it
As a general rule, service and administrative communications do not require an unsubscribe link, while marketing and promotional communications should provide a way for recipients to opt out.
Examples of service communications:
- Tee booking confirmations
- Competition entry confirmations
- Membership renewal notices
- Handicap notifications
- Clubhouse opening hours or closures
- Course condition updates
- Essential membership information
These emails are generally considered necessary to provide the service or manage the member's relationship with the club and therefore do not normally require an unsubscribe option.
Examples of marketing communications:
- Promotional newsletters
- Pro shop offers
- Restaurant promotions
- Sponsor or partner offers
- Event marketing
- Open competition advertising
These communications should provide recipients with a clear way to opt out of future marketing emails.
Managing marketing preferences
Members can manage their communication preferences through their profile settings. This is an acceptable method of managing marketing consent and preferences.
However, as a best practice, clubs should also choose to include an unsubscribe link within marketing or promotional emails, allowing recipients to opt out directly from the email itself.
Adding an Unsubscribe Link to Marketing Emails
If you send marketing or promotional emails and would like to include an unsubscribe option, add the following text to the bottom of your email template:
You can $UNSUBSCRIBE$ here.
When the email is sent, the $UNSUBSCRIBE$ placeholder will automatically be replaced with a personalised unsubscribe link for the recipient.
Example footer:
You are receiving this email because you are a member of Example Golf Club.
You can $UNSUBSCRIBE$ here.
We recommend adding this text to all marketing and promotional email templates to make it easy for recipients to manage their communication preferences.
