Setting up Google Analytics for your Website

Setting up Google Analytics for your Website

Setting up Google Analytics is the first step to understanding who your website’s visitors are and how they behave when browsing your website. Google Analytics is free and can be extremely useful when analysing and improving your club website.

This is a relatively complex set up but hopefully this guide can help by breaking it down into 3 separate steps:
  1. Setting up Google Tag Manager
  2. Setting up Google Analytics
  3. Embedding your GA Measurement ID

Setting up Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager is a free tag management system from Google.
The way it works is simple: Google Tag Manager takes all the data on your website and sends it to other platforms such as Google Analytics.

First, you’ll have to create an account on the Google Tag Manager dashboard.

Once you click on "Create Account" you'll give your account a name like "Kotarana Golf Club" for example and make sure that you tick to share data with Google. You'll then be asked to give a Container name. It's best practice to make this name as descriptive to the content content it's associated with. (i.e. Web, iOS etc).

Once you are ready you can click on "Create". You'll then be prompted with some Container code to input to your website but you don't need to do this just yet. You can now set up your Google Analytics Account.

Setting up Google Analytics

Like Google Tag Manager, you’re going to want to create a Google Analytics account by signing up on the GA page.

Create an Account linking in the account information you set up your Google Tag Manager as well as your Website URL, timezones etc.

Once you complete the above 5 steps you will then be given your tracking ID along with the below snippet of code which you can embed in your DotGolf Website:

To embed this in your DotGolf website you will need to place this in every webpage you wish to be included in the traffic. Go to your DotGolf website and view each page in administrative mode. Click on the "Edit Page" option in the box on the top right, then you'll be able to click on the red "Change this Content Area":

Once you are in the content editor you then need to click on the "Source" formatting option and paste in the Code previously provided. Then click on "Source" again before then saving those changes. Do this on every page you wish to track.

Now when you go back to your Google Analytics Dashboard you should be able to begin seeing traffic when people start visiting your website.

Embedding your GA Measurement ID

There is one final step that needs to be activated by DotGolf. You need to provide us with your GA Measurement ID. To get this go to your Google Analytics dashboard. Click on the "Settings" cog in the bottom left of your screen and then Click on the "Data Streams" option.

You'll then be shown all your available Data Streams. Click on the one set up for your Golf Club and you'll be given the below page.
